Sample the fine brews that the San Juan Islands have to offer while relaxing at this special Friday Harbor venue. Meet new people, learn about the beer-making process, and enjoy a relaxing evening. For those who participate in the bike event earlier in the evening, what better way to cap off a long and satisfying ride around memorable San Juan Island. (However, purchase of a brew ticket does not require purchase of a bike ticket.)
Friday Harbor Bike-n-Brew will host this event at the Marie Boe building at the San Juan County Fairgrounds in Friday Harbor. Who is Marie Boe, you ask?
Marie Boe was a past 4H leader on San Juan Island. The building is dedicated to her on behalf of her dedication and hard work with the 4-H community here in San Juan County. Marie and Leonard returned to Friday Harbor in 1948 to help run her father’s dairy. Because of her commercial sewing experience, Marie was asked to teach knitting and sewing to 4-H kids. Her service as a 4-H club leader extended to 35 years. In addition to being a club leader, she ran the 4-H Building at the fairgrounds. In 1999, she was honored with the Island Friend Award, given by the San Juan Historical Society for her contributions to the community. Many islanders have fond members of coming to the Boe home on San Juan Valley Road for knitting or sewing lessons, or to buy milk fresh from Leonard’s cows.
This event will feature the beer of three breweries, all from the San Juan Islands. Two of the microbreweries are on San Juan Island and one is on Lopez Island. They are:
This microbrewery was formed in 2014 on Lopez Island. It calls itself the smallest “nano-brewery” in Washington brewing with a 1/3-barrel brew system producing sixty 22-ounce bottles per batch. Yet it is already a local favorite on Lopez Island. This company has big expansion plans and is going places!
Visit their website for more information.
Consistent with the laidback attitudes of the San Juan Islands is the Friday Harbor Brewing Company. The brewmaster of this San Juan Island microbrewery has been brewing beer for 25 years. But he and his partner just opened their tasting room in a nondescript industrial location that you cannot find unless you know where it is, and is open “depending on the mood of the owner.”
The beer is anything but laid back. The microbrewery always has a large and varied menu available at its tasting room. Sample it all while you can because this microbrewery never makes the same beer twice!
The San Juan Island Brewing Company is the newest addition to the local microbrewry scene with a brand new restaurant and microbrewery in Friday Harbor opening this summer. The new business highlights its artistry, science and meticulous attention to detail. “Using the latest brewing technology and equipment, and the expertise of countless islanders, we go the extra mile to source the absolute highest quality of old world malts from Europe while using the freshest hops grown in Washington’s own Yakima Valley for a distinct flavor you can savor with every sip.”
Come to our event to taste their new products. You can learn about these products at their website.
Entrance to the event is $25 and includes eight tastes, adding up to two pints. Admission includes a commemorative tasting glass. Additional tastes may be purchased at the event for $1.50 each.
